Today, I visited the Jimma Immigration office to resolve a long-standing issue with my delayed passport. A year ago, I applied for passport renewal through the official national website, paid the required 2000 Birr, and received a confirmation message. Despite my hopes for a smooth process, my passport has yet to arrive. Meanwhile, many of my colleagues who applied much more recently have already received theirs.
Initially, I tried to handle the situation through the ministry’s email system, thinking that they would respond to my inquiries. Unfortunately, after two months, I had not received any replies. Phone calls to their office went unanswered as well. Running out of options, I decided to visit the Jimma Immigration office in person.
Upon arrival, I noticed that the building was new and the compound was beautifully gardened. However, the positive impression faded quickly at the front gate. The guard interrogated me with a degree of disrespect before letting me in. Once inside, I searched for any information about where to go or whom to speak with regarding my issue. Finding none, I began asking from office to office, each one redirecting me to another in a seemingly endless chain.
Finally, I found someone who appeared to be responsible. I explained my problem, but he simply told me to go outside and listen for my name when the newly arrived passport holders were called. I pointed out that the names being called were of recent applicants, who were informed online via Telegram. Despite knowing this, the officer dismissed me and sent me out of the office.
Feeling completely helpless and out of options, I left the office frustrated. I had emailed, called, and now visited in person, yet my problem remained unsolved. This experience left me questioning the efficiency and responsiveness of government services. What kind of service leaves its citizens in the dark with no assistance or answers?
Unfortunately, this is a common issue across the country. I have had a similar experience myself, and I know many friends who have faced the same problems. We are often left feeling helpless and frustrated by the lack of responsiveness and efficiency in government services. It’s disheartening.
